Does Spraying Around Your Home Protect Against Termites?

Can You Protect Your Home From Termites With an Exterior Pest Control Spray?

Why spraying around the outside of your home isn't the same as professional termite protection.

Today, I had a conversation with someone who asked a question that I believe many homeowners have wondered about: Could I simply come by and spray around the outside of their home to protect it from termites?

My answer was no.

Not because termite protection isn't important, but because a routine exterior surface treatment is not an appropriate method of protecting a home against subterranean termites.

At Hilbun Pest Control, we believe homeowners deserve to understand the difference.

Why Exterior Pest Control Sprays Don't Provide Termite Protection

When we perform a routine exterior pest control treatment, we're typically applying products to targeted areas around the home's foundation, entry points, and other locations where common household pests travel or enter.

These treatments can be effective against a variety of pests, depending on the products used and their labels.

But subterranean termites are different.

Unlike ants or spiders that may travel across exposed surfaces, subterranean termites generally live in the soil and travel through underground tunnels or protected mud tubes to reach the wood and other cellulose materials they feed on.

That means a surface spray around the exterior of your home does not establish the continuous, properly installed termite treatment zone needed for a conventional liquid termite treatment.

Simply spraying the outside of a foundation does not mean your home is protected against termites.

Termites Can Enter Where You Can't See Them

One of the biggest misconceptions about termites is that homeowners will notice them before significant damage occurs.

Unfortunately, subterranean termites can access a structure through areas that aren't readily visible, including:

  • Gaps and cracks in foundations
  • Plumbing and utility penetrations
  • Expansion joints and construction gaps
  • Concealed soil-to-wood connections
  • Protected pathways behind exterior finishes

Termites don't have to walk across an exposed, treated exterior wall to enter your home.

This is particularly important along the Gulf Coast, where subterranean termites, including aggressive Formosan subterranean termites, are a serious concern.

What Actually Provides Subterranean Termite Protection?

Professional subterranean termite management generally involves two established approaches.

1. Liquid Termite Treatments

A properly performed liquid termiticide treatment is designed to establish a treated zone in the soil at critical areas around and beneath a structure.

Depending on the construction and site conditions, this may involve trenching, soil treatment, drilling through concrete, or other application methods specified by the product label.

The objective is to treat the locations where subterranean termites are likely to travel between the soil and the structure.

This is fundamentally different from spraying a product across the surface of the home's exterior.

2. Termite Baiting Systems

Termite baiting systems take a different approach.

Professionally installed and maintained bait stations are positioned in accordance with the system's label and designed to intercept foraging termites.

When termites begin feeding on the bait, the active ingredient can affect the colony and potentially lead to colony elimination.

However, bait stations require appropriate installation, monitoring, and ongoing maintenance. They aren't simply placed in the ground and forgotten.

Neither approach should be confused with routine exterior pest control.

What About General Pest Control Services?

Regular pest control is still valuable.

Routine treatments help manage ants, cockroaches, spiders, and other common pests around your home.

But homeowners should understand that general pest control and termite protection are two different services with different treatment methods and objectives.

Having your home sprayed quarterly does not automatically mean you're receiving termite protection.

And even if a product is labeled for certain termite applications, that does not mean a routine surface application constitutes a complete structural termite treatment.

Why We Won't Sell You a Treatment That Doesn't Do the Job

At Hilbun Pest Control, we would rather explain why a requested treatment isn't appropriate than charge someone for a service that creates a false sense of security.

Termite damage can be expensive, and homeowners deserve to know what they're paying for.

If you're concerned about subterranean termites, the appropriate starting point is a professional inspection and a discussion about the treatment options suitable for your property.

Our job isn't simply to spray something.

Our job is to recommend pest management solutions that make sense, explain how they work, and perform them correctly.
