KNOW YOUR PEST
What Are German Cockroaches?
German cockroaches (Blattella germanica) are small, light-brown to tan cockroaches commonly found inside homes and businesses. Adults typically measure about half an inch long and have two distinctive dark stripes behind their heads.
Unlike American cockroaches and other larger species that frequently enter buildings from outdoors, German cockroaches primarily live and reproduce indoors.
They prefer warm, humid environments near food and water, making kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry areas particularly attractive.
How to Identify a German Cockroach
- Small, tan or light-brown body
- Two dark, parallel stripes behind the head
- Long antennae and six spiny legs
- Fast-moving, especially when disturbed
- Commonly found around cabinets, appliances, and plumbing
German cockroaches reproduce rapidly, and seeing even a few can warrant further investigation. Because they spend much of their time hidden, visible activity may represent only a portion of the infestation.

Both look nearly identical, but Asian cockroaches typically live outdoors and fly toward lights. German cockroaches breed indoors. Seeing one doesn't necessarily mean you have an infestation.
EARLY WARNING SIGNS
Signs of a German Cockroach Infestation
German cockroaches are primarily nocturnal, spending much of their time hidden in cracks, crevices, and areas near food and moisture. Because they reproduce quickly, identifying an infestation early can help prevent a much larger problem.
Common Signs to Watch For
- Live Cockroaches: Small, tan cockroaches appearing around kitchen cabinets, countertops, sinks, or appliances, especially at night.
- Baby Cockroaches: Small, dark-colored nymphs often indicate that German cockroaches are reproducing nearby.
- Droppings: Tiny, dark specks resembling ground pepper, commonly found along cabinet hinges, corners, and hiding places.
- Egg Cases: Small, brown, capsule-shaped egg cases may be found around infested areas.
- Daytime Activity: Frequently seeing German cockroaches during daylight hours may indicate a substantial infestation.
German cockroaches often remain hidden, so the activity you see may represent only a portion of the population.
UNDERSTANDING THE CHALLENGE
Why Are German Cockroaches So Difficult to Get Rid Of?
German cockroaches are among the most challenging household pests to eliminate. Their rapid reproduction, ability to hide in extremely small spaces, and resistance to certain insecticides can make ordinary household treatments ineffective.
What Makes Them So Persistent?
- Rapid Reproduction: A single female can produce multiple egg cases, each containing dozens of developing cockroaches.
- Hidden Harborages: German cockroaches shelter behind appliances, inside cabinets, and within cracks and crevices where sprays may not reach.
- Insecticide Resistance: Some populations have developed resistance to commonly used insecticides, making proper product selection important.
- Incomplete Treatments: Killing visible cockroaches doesn't necessarily eliminate the hidden population or developing eggs.
Store-bought sprays may temporarily reduce visible activity without addressing the entire infestation. Effective control requires targeting the areas where German cockroaches live, hide, and reproduce.

OUR TREATMENT APPROACH
Professional German Cockroach Treatment That Targets the Infestation
Eliminating German cockroaches requires more than spraying the insects you can see. At Hilbun Pest Control, we focus on identifying where cockroaches are hiding, targeting active infestations, and interrupting their reproductive cycle.
Our Approach to German Cockroach Control
1. Inspection & Identification
We inspect kitchens, bathrooms, appliances, cabinets, and other common hiding areas to identify cockroach activity and determine the extent of the infestation.
2. Targeted Treatment
We use professional-grade insecticides selected for German cockroach control, including non-repellent treatments when appropriate. Applications focus on the cracks, crevices, and hiding areas where cockroaches spend their time.
3. Reproduction Control
When appropriate, insect growth regulators (IGRs) are incorporated into treatment programs to interfere with cockroach development and reproduction.
4. Follow-Up & Monitoring
German cockroach infestations often require additional attention. Follow-up inspections and treatments help address remaining activity and newly emerged cockroaches.
AFTER YOUR SERVICE
What Happens After German Cockroach Treatment?
Following treatment, you should notice a sharp decline in German cockroach activity within the first several days, often followed by a period with little to no visible activity.
As existing egg cases hatch, you may notice a few tiny German cockroaches appearing. Don't be discouraged! This is something we anticipate and prepare for.
That's why we encourage scheduling a follow-up visit before completing your initial service. If new activity appears, we can promptly return, reinforce the treatment, and target newly hatched cockroaches before they mature and reproduce.
Our goal is simple: break the reproductive cycle, eliminate the infestation, and help you get your home back to normal.
COMMON QUESTIONS
Frequently Asked Questions About German Cockroaches
How long does it take to get rid of German cockroaches?
Most homeowners begin noticing a significant reduction in activity within several days of treatment. Complete elimination can take longer depending on the infestation's severity, existing egg cases, and whether additional treatments are needed.
Can German cockroaches come back after treatment?
Newly hatched cockroaches may appear after the initial treatment because existing egg cases can continue developing. Follow-up treatments help eliminate remaining activity and interrupt the reproductive cycle.
Why aren't store-bought sprays effective against German cockroaches?
Many household sprays contain repellent insecticides that can cause cockroaches to avoid treated areas. Some German cockroach populations also have resistance to common insecticides, making professional treatment particularly valuable.

Does seeing one German cockroach mean I have an infestation?
Not necessarily. German cockroaches closely resemble Asian cockroaches, which commonly live outdoors. Proper identification is important, although a confirmed German cockroach sighting indoors warrants further inspection.
How Do German Cockroaches Get Introduced Into a Home?
German cockroaches are commonly brought into homes unknowingly through grocery bags, cardboard boxes, deliveries, used furniture, and appliances. They can also spread between neighboring apartments through shared walls and plumbing openings. Even a clean, well-maintained home can develop an infestation when German cockroaches are accidentally introduced.
